ICAR Registers new 16 Indigenous Livestock and Dog Breeds, Enhancing Documentation and Conservation of India’s Animal Genetic Resources

In a major milestone for documenting and conserving India’s livestock biodiversity, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has officially approved the registration of 16 newly identified indigenous animal breeds. The decision was taken during the 14th meeting of the Breed Registration Committee held in New Delhi, chaired by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (Animal Science), ICAR. The committee recommended the inclusion of these livestock and dog breeds to further strengthen systematic characterization and reduce the number of undocumented animal genetic resources in the country. ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal, the national nodal institute for breed registration in livestock and poultry, has assigned unique accession numbers to each of the newly recognized breeds. The registered list comprises Umarda, Periyar, Koppal, and Mahakaushali cattle; Gomanchali buffalo; Madgyal, Seemanchali, Kow Debar, and Asomi sheep; Totapuri and Battisi goats; Kombai dog; Nagal pig; Kashmiri pony; Braj donkey; and Sikkimese yak.  These registrations cover nine species across 13 states and one Union Territory. With this addition, the total number of registered livestock and poultry breeds in India has reached 262, including 258 indigenous and 4 synthetic breeds.

This recognition highlights the pivotal role of livestock keepers, breeders, state animal husbandry departments, universities, and research institutions in conserving and promoting India’s animal genetic resources. The registration of indigenous breeds is a crucial step towards their documentation, conservation, and sustainable utilization, aligned with the national commitment to food and livelihood security and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
