Training Program on “Characterization, Registration and Conservation of Native Animal Genetic Resources” from 8-12 September 2025

ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal is organizing a sponsored training program for III Batch of Veterinary Officers under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (DAH&VS), Govt. of Odisha from September 08-12, 2025 on “Characterization, Registration and Conservation of Native Animal Genetic Resources”. This training program is organized in collaboration with the Veterinary Officers Training Institute (VOTI), Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The five-day program is sponsored by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department (FARD), Government of Odisha. Earlier, two batches of Veterinary Officers have also attended the similar sponsored training course organized by ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal in the month of August and September, 2024. A total of 13 veterinary officers from different regions of Odisha are participating in this program. The training is being coordinated by Dr. Manish Mukesh, Principal Scientist & I/c HRD Cell and Dr. M. S.Dige, Senior Scientist of this institute.

Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Director, ICAR-CIRC, Meerut graced the inaugural ceremony of the training programme as the Chief Guest on 08 September, 2025 and addressed the participants from Odisha state. He congratulated the participants for attending this course and thanked the sponsoring departments (F&RAD as well as VOTI, Govt. of Odisha) for taking such initiatives and deputing veterinary officers of Odisha state to ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal. Dr. N. H. Mohan, Director, ICAR-NBAGR, Karnal while addressing the participants highlighted the importance of such training courses in developing trained human resource for characterization, documentation and management of native animal genetic resources (AnGR).

The training is designed to equip veterinary officers of Odisha state with advanced knowledge and hands-on skills essential for the characterization, conservation and scientific management of native AnGR. During the course, expert-led sessions covering diverse aspects of AnGR management such as zero-nondescript mission, breed registration, livestock census, conservation strategies, phenotypic and genetic characterization, modern genomic and breeding tools for AnGR characterization and improvement, ecosystem services, value addition as well as trait characterization in native livestock are being covered. In addition, the program features practical demonstrations, field visits, and interactive discussions on sustainable utilization and management of native animal genetic resources.
